NEW YORK TIMES
BOOK REVIEW

Lowry's concerns in Gathering Blue are impressively large.
The novel is sure to raise the kind of questions
relevant to our own time.

What kind of world are we creating for future generations? Can art really shape the way an underclass lives? And is it better for an individual to work toward improving a flawed, repressivesociety, or reject it and search for a better place to live?

About the show
Based on Lois Lowry's (Number the Stars, The Giver) best-selling book, Gathering Blue is making its west-coast premiere in La Mirada! The production, which is the second in the The Giver Quartet, tackles the age-old dilema of power versus freedom. Set in an apocalyptic future that exists in the same world as The Giver, children are kept like animals and human life is cheap. Young Kira uses her art as a way of relieving her own maltreatment as well as those undergoing oppression around her.
